Red Kites at Gigrin Farm and an Overnight in the Elan Valley
Few experiences in Wales match the sight of red kites wheeling through the air in their hundreds. Spend a weekend in Rhayader with two relaxed nights that combine wildlife photography at Gigrin Farm and unhurried exploring in the quiet lakes and wild hills of the Elan Valley. It is an easy trip that balances excitement and peace in equal measure.
Friday Afternoon and Evening
Arrive in Rhayader after lunch and head straight for the Elan Valley. Stop at the visitor centre to pick up a map and stretch your legs before driving the loop of stone dams and reservoirs. Each has its own charm, from the graceful arches of Craig Goch to the deep curves of Caban Coch.
Take your time as the light softens across the water and hills. There are plenty of short paths and viewpoints where you can set up a tripod or simply watch the sun dip behind the ridges. Return to Rhayader for supper and an early night ready for the kites tomorrow.
Saturday: The Red Kite Experience
After a relaxed breakfast, prepare for the afternoon feeding session at Gigrin Farm just outside town. Feeding usually takes place at 2pm in winter and 3pm in summer, changing with the clocks. Arrive early to check in, choose your hide and get set up before the first birds appear.
The main flurry lasts around fifteen minutes, but the air stays alive with movement long after. A fast shutter speed, continuous autofocus and a zoom lens in the 300 to 500 range work well here. The hides face east, so the light generally stays behind you in the afternoon.
When the activity settles, take a short walk around the fields before heading back to town. You will find plenty of small places to eat, or you can enjoy a quiet evening drive to catch the last light over the dams once more.
Sunday: A Little More to Explore
If you have time before heading home, visit one or two of the Elan Valley viewpoints again in the morning when mist hangs low over the water. There are easy routes near Pen y Garreg and Craig Goch, and a short stroll is often rewarded with mirror still reflections. This is a peaceful way to round off your visit before joining the main road home.
Practical Tips
- Book your hide in advance if you want a photographer hide with wider openings and extra space.
- Bring warm layers and a waterproof even in summer as the weather can change quickly.
- Allow time to explore the Elan Valley at a gentle pace. The estate roads are narrow and scenic.
- There are car parks at Gigrin Farm and at each of the main dams. Some require payment by card or coins.
- Two nights of accommodation are perfect for this itinerary. Arrive Friday, enjoy the red kites on Saturday, and spend Sunday morning exploring before heading home.
