Wales Dark Sky Map

Wales — A Dark Sky Nation

Wales has become one of the world’s leading destinations for stargazing. With three International Dark Sky Reserves — Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), Eryri (Snowdonia), and the Elan Valley Estate — alongside more than 30 Dark Sky Discovery Sites, the nation is working towards the ambitious goal of being recognised as a true “Dark Sky Nation.” This effort brings together communities, astronomers, and conservationists to protect the night from light pollution and to preserve a heritage of wonder for future generations.

The BBC documentary Our Lives: Guardians of the Night highlighted these grassroots campaigns, showing how local people are fighting to protect the brilliance of the Welsh night sky. These skies have not only drawn visitors but also filmmakers, artists, and photographers from around the world who seek inspiration under the Milky Way.

For astrophotographers, Wales offers some of the best conditions in Europe. From wide-field astro-landscape photography to deep-sky imaging of galaxies and nebulae, the combination of dark horizons and dramatic landscapes is unmatched. Whether capturing the sweep of the Milky Way over Castell Carreg Cennen, or photographing star trails above the rugged peaks of Eryri, the potential for night sky imaging here is limitless.

These maps are your guide to experiencing the magic of Wales by night. Use them to discover perfect stargazing locations, plan astrophotography adventures, or simply reconnect with the stars above.
