A Weekend Exploring the Island of Anglesey

Anglesey is one of those places that feels larger than life once you’re there. Big skies, wide beaches and miles of coastal paths make it perfect for a weekend escape. You can cross the bridge on Friday evening, explore all day Saturday and Sunday and still feel like you’ve truly seen the island.

Friday Evening

Arrive in time for an easy supper and a stroll along the Menai Strait. The old town of Beaumaris is a lovely base with sea views and cafés that stay open late in summer. If you prefer a quieter start, Menai Bridge has good inns and restaurants just a short walk from the waterfront.

Drop your bags, take a short walk to watch the light over the water and get ready for two full days of adventure.

Saturday: The East and South Coast

Start the morning in Beaumaris, home to one of Wales’s finest castles. Built by Edward I, Beaumaris Castle remains beautifully symmetrical even centuries later. Wander its walls and imagine life when this was the final link in the king’s Iron Ring of fortresses.

After a coffee on the seafront, drive west to Newborough Forest. Follow the sandy path to Llanddwyn Island, where stone ruins and the whitewashed Tŵr Mawr lighthouse stand against turquoise water. The walk is easy and unforgettable. Allow a couple of hours to explore before heading back through the pines.

If you have time in the afternoon, visit Halen Môn Sea Salt near Brynsiencyn for a short tour or stroll the gardens at Plas Newydd on the Menai Strait. Both give a flavour of island life away from the coast.

For sunset, return to the beach or make your way to Red Wharf Bay for a drink with a view.

Sunday: Wild Cliffs and Coastal Paths

Drive west to Holy Island for a morning at South Stack. The RSPB reserve sits high above the Irish Sea, its cliffs alive with seabirds in spring and summer. You can walk the steps down toward the lighthouse or simply enjoy the view from above.

From here, it’s only a short hop to Breakwater Country Park where a circular path leads up Holyhead Mountain. The summit looks out over the whole island.

After lunch in Trearddur Bay, continue north to the strange and beautiful landscape of Parys Mountain near Amlwch. The colours of the old copper mine glow in shades of orange, purple and gold and short trails loop through the site.

If you prefer something gentler, head instead to Cemaes Bay for a peaceful seaside walk before beginning the journey home.

Practical Tips

  • Anglesey is compact, but it’s worth allowing extra time for slow roads and photo stops.
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof and a warm layer for breezy viewpoints.
  • Parking at Newborough, South Stack and some beaches is paid, so keep a few coins or a card handy.
  • Two nights of accommodation is perfect for this itinerary. Arrive Friday, explore Saturday and Sunday and drive home feeling like you’ve had a proper break.
